Apple updates EFI firmware on 2010 Macs to offers Lion internet recovery

Staring forlorn at that two-year-old MacBook, just sitting there in the corner? Well, there’s good news; Apple’s decided to furnish those 2010 models with a new EFI firmware update. Arriving on its MacBook Air (late 2010), iMac (mid 2010) and MacBook Pro (early 2010) models, it adds support for Lion’s internet-based recovery feature — something that’s very useful for those optical drive-less MacBook Airs and Mac minis. The update also fixes a bug on Air models, where it would reset if the power button was pressed immediately after booting from deep sleep mode. You can consult your Mac’s software updater for the new firmware — it’s out there now.

The last Symbian device might be the greatest camera phones ever!

The last Symbian device might be the greatest camera phones ever!

How good can phone cameras be right? They’re made for mobile, everything has shrunk down to size, they don’t have all the fancy features your normal cameras do and they usually only look good on the screen because the images have been shrunk to fit the tiny display and all the flaws are hidden. Well, not really; Nokia plans to change that mindset by fitting in the largest camera sensor to its rumored device – the Nokia 803. Running on Symbian, yes the old Symbian OS you thought had died, the Nokia N8 successor (rumored) is reported to feature a 4” AMOLED display, 1GHz processor, HDMI-out, microSIM, DLNA and NFC.

Now, the Nokia 803 might not be the best phones around – seriously, AMOLED instead of Super AMOLED, and a 1GHz processor instead of all those dual-cores around, but it might be one of the greatest camera phones available. The launch is expected to be somewhere around May and will run on the latest version of Symbian – Symbian Belle.

Anyhow, whether this last Symbian device is to your taste or not, it is expected to make its first appearance in the upcoming Mobile World Congress 2012 happening later this month so stay tuned to find out more.

Next month you can say “Ohaiyo” to Siri!

Next month you can say “Ohaiyo” to Siri!

Japanese, Russians and Mandarin-speaking Chinese rejoice because Siri is reported to be able to speak your language by March this year. According to a Chinese tech blog DoNews, they reported that Apple engineers are currently working on the Mandarin version of Siri and it is already in testing phase now.

While Siri may be able to speak 3 new languages by next month (and hopefully 4 because it was rumored last year that the team behind Siri was working on a Bahasa Malaysia version as well expected to be released in the first half of this year) on top of the 3 existing English dialects and 2 other languages, it still doesn’t mean that Siri is closer to any of us – it still won’t be able to give you location-based requests outside of the States which makes all those “I’m sorry, I’m unable to find restaurants in Malaysia” very annoying.

No news have been released regarding whether it’ll support other languages like Taiwanese Mandarin, Cantonese, Korean and such but let’s hope the new language support indicates that Apple is working hard on Siri and bringing it closer to us and hopefully to its other devices.

Microsoft celebrating leap year right by launching Windows 8 Consumer Preview at MWC

Perhaps celebrating a push toward the mobile space with its traditionally desktop-bound OS — or maybe just doing its best to further confuse the similar naming conventions with its forthcoming smartphone operating system — Microsoft today sent out invites for a February 29th Mobile World Congress event that will see the launch of its Windows 8 Consumer Preview. Details are scarce about the two-hour event, but you’d better believe that we’ll be there in Barcelona with bells on.

Upcoming new Nissan GTR… or not?

Always wanted to buy a Nissan GTR R35 but banned by the missus due to it being only 2-doors? Well too bad Nissan said their Juke-R35 is only a non-production fun project. But what if we have a four door sedan with the powerful 3.8-litre twin-turbocharged VR38DETT V6 engine as the heart?

Well here it is dear gentlemen, and of course our lovely petrol-head ladies all over the world. Let me introduce you to the dream sedan of many, the four-door Nissan GTR-R35. Of course, this beauty started life as a Nissan Teana.

If only they had used the original JDM rims. Those deep dish VIP style rims with low profile tyres totally spoil the beauty of this thing.

$60 Aakash Tablet to cost no-cash?

Kapil Sibal’s not resting after the explosion of interest that followed the initial launch of the $60 Aakash education tablet. He’s now pushing to get the rebadged DataWind Ubislate 7 into the hands of students free of charge, rather than the $35 they currently pay. The plan is to offer a 50 percent government subsidy for each unit, with education institutions fronting the other half, but only if inclined to do so. He’s also pushing for the tablet to be manufactured domestically rather than imported — hoping that the comforts of home will enable it to spread nationwide.

Ferrari to unveil new F620 in Geneva

Ferrari to unveil new F620 in Geneva

It’s not every day that Ferrari unveils a new model. And most of the time, when it does, it’s a variant of an existing one. But when the doors open at the Geneva Motor Show next month, word has it that the House that Enzo Built will be showcasing an all-new front-engined V12 GT to replace the long-serving 599.

Dubbed F620, the all-new supercar is expected to pack a 6.2-liter version of the direct-injection V12 from the FF into an aluminum chassis. Expect the usual smattering of carbon fiber bits, but don’t expect to see the costly material being used for structural components: Ferrari has discounted the application due to its high cost to manufacture and repair. Also off the table for this model is the part-time all-wheel-drive system from the FF, as the F620′s anticipated 700 horsepower will drive the rear wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox.
