iPhone 5 rumors round up in video form

August 15th, 2011

Signs point to a September 7 event for Apple to show off its new iPhone offerings. The past few months have been filled with rumors of what the next big Apple product will be like, even though Apple’s kept a tight lid on things.

French site Nowhere Else made a neat looking video recapping some of the rumors thus far. They come with concept renders as well as a probability rating. Of course, nothing is truly 100 percent until Steve Jobs says so on stage, but there are some safe bets, such as the A5 chip.

Leak: future iOS update to introduce Siri-based voice control

When Apple snatched up Siri back in April, we wonder what exactly Cupertino was planning for the voice controlled virtual assistant. Well, the answer, according to a new leak, is unsurprisingly obvious: iOS integration.

A screenshot leaked to 9to5Mac flaunts an “Assistant” feature presumably built into a firmware update. To back up the screenshot, the aforesaid site dove into the iOS SDK and uncovered code describing Siri-like use of the iPhone’s location, contact list, and song metadata. The code also outlined a “speaker” feature, opening a door for further Nuance integration in Apple products.

Sounds awesome? Sure does, but take it with a pint of salt, as 9to5′s source says the assistant feature only just went into testing, and may not be ready in time for Apple’s next iPhone. Hit the source link to see the code and conjecture for yourself.

Unofficial Swype port makes its way to iOS, slides in via Jailbreak

Unofficial Swype port makes its way to iOS, slides in via Jailbreak

It seemed that JailbreakMe may bring more features than just “easiest way to jailbreak”. If you haven’t use JailbreakMe, Andrew Liu’s new Swype iOS port may pique your interest. Although the app is still in the earliest of stages — version 0.1.0, to be exact — we can confirm it works, but it did take us two downloads via a repo with Cydia and functionality proved limited.

We were able to swipe words in pre-loaded apps like Messaging, Mail and Search, but had no luck with Safari or others we’ve downloaded. Furthermore, Swype’s all-important blue trace-line is absent, and our words didn’t always come out as expected.

Liu stated on Twitter that the current release is still a beta and that he’ll be sprucing it up soon.

Google Sync adds mail server search, appointment confirmation to native iOS apps

Google Sync adds mail server search, appointment confirmation to native iOS apps

Google Sync has pushed Gmail messages, calendar updates, and contacts to iOS since its launch in 2009, but this half-baked solution previously lacked some key functionality. Beginning today, users can finally perform mail server searches and confirm appointment requests from their iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

This means that you’ll be able to search for messages in your entire mailbox, not just for emails stored on your device — a feature that first appeared with iPhone OS 3, but without Google Sync support. You can also respond to calendar invites from within the Calendar app. Fancy that!

A third update brings support for sending messages from other addresses listed in your Gmail account, though only the first two features worked when we took Sync for a spin this afternoon. (Curiously, Google omitted a “Send Mail as” screenshot on its blog, so this last update may not actually be available yet.)

This latest trio of updates is available for both gratis and Google Apps accounts, so head to the source link for set up instructions and the full feature rundown.

Third Rail iPhone case has detachable battery to electrocute your iPhone 4 for more power

Third Rail iPhone case has detachable battery to electrocute your iPhone 4 for more power

Someone wants to give your iPhone 4 additional booze to move on at times when the Ultraman light starts blinking, but the method that they are offering might be slightly ‘deadly’. It’s called the Third Rail System, which includes an iPhone 4 Slim Case, all for only $90.

It hugs your phone snugly, and has a 1250 mAh Smart Battery that you can slide into place whenever you need a boost. The removable batteries can charge other devices over micro USB, and can be stacked up to four deep for charging multiple gadgets at once (at $60 a pop).

It’s also designed to be compatible with future cases, negating the need to purchase another complete solution each time you upgrade your phone, which is a very welcome idea, but I’m not sure how that really works since they didn’t mention this part.

White iPhone 4 available now, but sadly nobody cared

Pushed from June to July to September to January, now it’s finally here in April, or you can call it May since we’re getting ready to say goodbye to April anyway. Yes, it’s the real deal, not a Chinese white body-case add-on shit. The white iPhone 4 is now officially available.

We’ve seen retailers making space for the elusive handset since January, and now Vodafone UK’s inventory systems were showing the white iPhone 4 as shipping in. Apparently customers in Britain have received the phones over the weekend.

Samsung slaps Apple back with ten patent infringement claims

Remember the hype of Apple suing their parts supplier Samsung over their smartphones’ resemblance? Well, we’ve got good news for you (or bad news, however you like it to be). The Korean giant has strike back with loaded ammo with ten patent infringement claims to Apple. These include five patent infringements in South Korea, two in Japan, and three in Germany, mainly involving power reduction during data transmission, 3G technology for reducing errors during data transmission, and wireless data communication technology.

Next iPhone coming in September, improved antenna despite same old design

Next iPhone coming in September, improved antenna despite same old design

Though many have taken the idea that Apple will most certainly skip the iPhone in their upcoming WWDC 2011, but there’s no harm in dreaming about it becoming a reality right? We already know a few almost-confirmed key points about the next iPhone. It will most certainly have a slightly bigger screen, and will most certainly have no NFC chip. Let’s not forget that Apple may implement a new metal-back on the new iPhone through the acquisition of the Liquid Metal company.

We also know that the next iPhone might have a touch-sensitive Home-button, and although the design will not have a drastic change, we also know that the internal organs will get some beefy boost in terms of the dual-core A5 processor, but the rumours have stopped recently.

Now, Ming-Chi Kuo of Concord Securities (who has been dead-on in the past) talked with sources in Apple’s supply chain and learn that the next iPhone will boast the same A5 processor seen in the iPad 2, along with an 8 megapixel rear camera, improved antenna design, and that Qualcomm baseband for both GSM and CDMA models we’ve seen bandied about (technically, the one in the current Verizon version is already GSM-capable).

His sources also claim that Apple will begin mass production of its next-gen phone in September, which aligns nicely with what we estimate, of Apple moving to a fall launch. And because of the ongoing disaster in Japan, the company might not have sufficient supplies to launch a new iPod touch at the same time.

Usually people tend to spill lots of incredibly crazy rumours when it comes to the iPhone, but Ming-Chi’s source has always been reliable. So, until September then.

Insiders at UK carriers say next iPhone won’t have NFC

Insiders at UK carriers say next iPhone won’t have NFC

NFC chip in smartphones are becoming the trend of 2011 after dual-core, all thanks to Google’s Nexus S touting it as a major feature. We also previously heard that Apple has considered having NFC chip in its next iPhone, but after a long and secret development, it seemed that Apple will skip NFC for this year. That particular source is reportedly coming directly from meetings with the Cupertino top shots, which is said to be dissatisfied with the current lack of a clear, universal NFC standard. Well, Apple has always omit or delay features it seemed not fit for its generation, and NFC looks to be fated this way this time.
