Dropbox offers up to 5GB of free space to anyone willing to go beta

Here’s some good news for all you Dropboxers out there: the company is offering a bundle of free storage space to anyone who tries the beta version of its new Experimental software. It’s really quite simple: just download the test program, upload a photo, and instantly get 500MB of free storage. Upload another photo or video, and an additional 500MB will magically appear at your doorstep. The idea is to test out the beta software’s new photo and video uploader, which automatically pulls media from any camera, smartphone or SD card and drops it in the cloud. Free space is limited to 5GB per user, and there’s an inherent risk to testing any unfinished product, but those willing to make the leap can find all the requisite materials and information at the source link, below.

Yahoo unveils app search page for Android and iOS to simplify your life even more

Yahoo may be sliding down the search engine totem pole, but the company is doing its best to climb back up, with a new space dedicated to apps. This week, Yahoo added a new “Apps” tab to its search page, giving users a new portal into both the Android Market and iTunes App Store. Results can be filtered by both price and category, with iOS and Android apps aligned in separate tabs. Once you select an app, you can download it by scanning a QR code, sending a download link to your handset, or by simply clicking through to iTunes or the Android Market. There’s also a “trending now” interface, as well as a full list of Yahoo user reviews, displayed directly within the page. Check it out for yourself, at the source link below.

LG's triple SIM A290: the phone every Russian Casanova needs

Dual-SIM phones are perfect for when the carriers are desperate for your business, keeping your work life separate, or to mask your philandering. But what if two isn’t enough? LG is producing a phone with a third SIM slot, only one less than the ridiculously equipped OTECH F1. The A290 candy-bar throwback sports a 176 x 220, 2.2-inch display, 1.3 megapixel camera, LED flashlight and a 1,500mAh battery. Russians (for the phone is exclusive to that particular nation up north) looking to swell their SIM collection can do so from next month at the cost of €75 ($100).

Meizu to launch first store outside mainland China, opening in Hong Kong this month

Meizu to launch first store outside mainland China, opening in Hong Kong this month

That’s right, despite its short-lived battle with Apple last year, Meizu has finally decided it is time to make it out of China. Well, out of mainland China at least, as the company has chosen Hong Kong as its launch pad for entering the international market.

Later this month, visitors of Mongkok will notice a brand new Meizu store pop up somewhere along Sai Yeung Choi Street, where the upcoming dual-core, 4-inch 960 x 640 MX Android phone will also be sold starting in early January — just a tad later than its mainland counterpart.

What’s more, the Hong Kong version will come with extra features such as Facebook, Google Mobile Services and various Android Market apps that are absent on the original MX. Prices and absolute date to be confirmed later this month, but either way, we have a feeling that we’ll be seeing some long lines again around China, if not Hong Kong.

Lenovo LePhone K2 to arrive with 4.3-inch IPS display, 1.5GHz dual-core chip

Lenovo LePhone K2 to arrive with 4.3-inch IPS display, 1.5GHz dual-core chip

Lenovo is in a spree of product announcement this week. With that mild 3.7-inch Android smartphone and the massive 5-inch tabletphone, there’s seriously not much kick to the news. Well, don’t worry, because here’s a little surprise for us all, the LePhone K2.

What we got here is a 4.3-inch IPS display (resolution of which not yet announced), a powerful dual-core 1.5GHz Qualcomm MSM8260 chip, 1GB RAM, 1GB ROM and an eight megapixel 1080p camera. Sadly, like the S2 and the S760, this crouching tiger also packs Android 2.3.5 instead of Ice Cream Sandwich, but without a price or a release date, perhaps there’s still a small chance that we’ll see it eventually launching with the newer OS.

Lenovo launches LePad S2005, a 5-inch Gingerbread tabletphone for China

Lenovo launches LePad S2005, a 5-inch Gingerbread tabletphone for China

You may recall that last week we had a cheeky peek at Lenovo’s upcoming tabletphone, and now Lenovo had remove the curtain to this mysterious product. Dubbed the LePad S2005 in China (and to be branded under the IdeaTab series elsewhere), this Android 2.3.5 slate packs a 5-inch 800 x 480 LTPS display with 178-degree viewing angle (but same resolution as the Dell Streak 5′s LCD, sadly), a Qualcomm dual-core 1.2GHz chip, 1GB RAM, a five megapixel 1080p imager on the back, a 1.3 megapixel front-facing camera and a 1,680mAh battery.

In terms of connectivity and expansion we have a micro-USB port, micro-HDMI port and HSPA+ radio (so it’s ready for China Unicom’s network). All of this is packaged in a 9.95mm-thick body, weighing a total of 198g. Just as thick as the Streak 5 but lighter, even with the slightly larger battery capacity.

There aren’t any prices just yet, but given that this device is entering the Chinese market in two days’ time, it won’t be a long wait for those obsessed with tabletphones. What’s also odd here is that Lenovo’s marketing this as a tablet rather than a phone.

Galaxy Nexus OTA update quietly rolls out, addresses volume bug

Google, as promised, has begun rolling out an OTA update for the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, in response to a curious volume bug affecting many European users. According to Android Central, “several” Nexus users have reported receiving the update, bundled in a package that weighs a little less than 1MB. Early reports indicate that the refresh only addresses the volume issue, though it appears to be rolling out on a piecemeal basis.

Motorola Droid RAZR goes under the knife at iFixit labs

It’s become a rite of passage for any major smartphone — a few hours under the knife (read: dozuki saw!), for the good ‘ol iFixit teardown. Today’s victim is the Motorola Droid RAZR. The teardown revealed that most of the key components are on one side of the motherboard, where you’ll find the Toshiba THGBM4G7D2GBAIE 16GB EMMC flash memory module, Samsung K3PE7E700M-XGC1 4GB LPDDR2 RAM, Qualcomm MDM6600 dual-mode baseband/RF transceiver, Motorola T6VP0XBG-0001 LTE processor and other goodies like the combo Bluetooth/WiFi/GPS receiver. Wondering what else Motorola was able to pack neatly below that 4.3-inch qHD Super AMOLED display? Hit up the source link for the full iFixit teardown.

Samsung crashes iPhone 4S block party, lures Aussies with $2 Galaxy S IIs

Apple boldly rejected Samsung’s settlement offer in Australia, and so the cat fight just keep going. The latter certainly isn’t afraid of striking back in its enemy’s front yard you see. The Sydney Morning Herald reports that Samsung’s set up a pop-up store merely meters away from Apple’s Sydney store, all for just stealing the thunder from the iPhone 4S launch last Friday. The campaign? For the first ten customers each day up to Friday, the Korean giant’s offering its Galaxy S II for just $2 sans contract — no wonder the line’s already longer than Apple’s, according to the Herald. But of course, Samsung’s also effectively funding some of these folks for their iPhone 4S from next door, so it’s pretty much a win-win situation for both companies. See? There’s always a happy ending.

Nokia passes off Symbian and 2,300 employees to Accenture

Nokia passes off Symbian and 2,300 employees to Accenture

After placing all bets on Windows Phone, Stephen Elop announced that Nokia would slowly phase out its OG operating system, Symbian. Today, it’s officially passed the torch, handing over all Symbian-related duties to Accenture, a consulting and outsourcing firm.

2,300 former Nokia employees will also be repurposed, getting a new name on their paycheck as they tend to the ill-fated OS. The Finnish mainstay says the arrangement will last until at least 2016, and plans to continually roll out updates during this time.

Not everyone is hanging on another five years though, as it seems that at least 500 employees have jumped ship or found new gigs within the company since the original announcement predicting 2,800 reassignments.
