iPhone 4S cleared for use in China, sino-Siri coming soon

While Apple fans around the globe have had the iPhone 4S for a while now, many of our friends in the Far East haven’t gotten to enjoy the fruits of their countrymen’s labor due to a lack of governmental approval. You see, before a handset makes it onto Chinese networks, it’s got to be approved by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT). The good news is, the 4S has finally been blessed by Beijing and will be brought to the masses by Chinese Unicom sometime soon. That means that China’s home-grown superphone, the Meizu MX, is going to have some Siri-ous competition for Chinese hearts and yuan in 2012.

Pioneer MIXTRAX embeds mediocre DJ in your car stereo

Pioneer MIXTRAX embeds mediocre DJ in your car stereo

Pioneer is set to introduce a new functionality to a few of its stereos – including the much-hyped AppRadio – that mixes the songs on your iPhone, iPod or USB drive on the fly.

By measuring beats per minute and other data, MIXTRAX can supposedly beat-match and add effects and transitions into songs to create a seamless mix, all while animating the cover art to match the tempo. If you want to leave the mixing to yourself, Pioneer plans to offer a PC version of the mixing software that lets you save mixes to a USB drive or SD card, along with an iPhone app that lets you interact with the software and port your club masterpieces directly into your AppRadio.

MIXTRAX will be available this January on the aforementioned AppRadio and DEH-P7400HD, DEH-P8400BH and AVH-P8400BH AV receivers. You can get a taste of the system in action in the cheesetastic videos after the break. Read more…

Apple applies for ‘digital handshake’ patent powered by invisible ink

Apple applies for 'digital handshake' patent powered by invisible ink

Time for the usual disclaimer, since we’re taking a journey into the murky world of Cupertino’s patent applications — it’s just as likely we’ll never see or hear of this tech again as it is to wind up in the next iPhone. While everyone else is betting on NFC, Apple wants to use next-generation cameras and invisible ink to negotiate digital handshakes. Snap a picture of a cash register with a barcode and your iDevice will generate a unique ID to pair up — but in order to keep the technology secure, the codes would have to be painted on with “invisible” fluorescent coatings. When you’re pairing two iPhones (for example) to share contacts, the key could be generated on one of the screens while the other took a picture of it. If this all seems too complex, boring and pointless now, just think: this could be how we log into Foursquare in a decade’s time.

Siri lends a hand via your Bluetooth-enabled car stereo

Siri lends a hand via your Bluetooth-enabled car stereo

Sure, we’ve seen Siri used to do a host of things, including controlling the temperature in a hacker’s home. But the folks over at Autoblog were curious to know just how well the virtual assistant would work with Bluetooth-enabled car stereos. Yes, talking to Siri in your car! Once your iPhone 4S is properly tethered, holding down the handset’s home button will activate Siri. Treating her as an incoming call, your Notorious B.I.G. playlist will pause before the ready-for-command chime sounds. The in-car assistant was tested on two Mercedes-Benz automobiles, a Chrysler 300, a Dodge Charger and a Nissan Maxima, with the Maxima showcasing the best results. It comes as no surprise that mic placement on each stereo and in-cabin background noise provided a noticeable difference in Siri’s listening abilities during the test. For a glimpse of the action before trying it out yourself, hit the video just past the break.

Stay tuned as we learn more about the new refresh.

Some iOS 5 users lose WiFi connectivity

Some iOS 5 users lose WiFi connectivity

Of all the enhancements to discover in Apple’s iOS 5 upgrade, it seems that an unforeseen monster may have snuck its way into the release. We’re now reading through a handful of user complaints about losing WiFi after taking the plunge, with most replies mentioning intermittent connectivity and / or a significant loss in signal strength. The issue remains unconfirmed by Apple, but it appears to span across a number of devices, including the iPhone 4S, 4 and 3GS, along with the iPad (and possibly, the iPod Touch). By troubleshooting, one user was able to resolve the problem by reverting to iOS 4.3, then cause it to manifest — once again — by upgrading to iOS 5. The recent iOS 5.0.1 update certainly hasn’t fixed the matter, either. Could these reports be an unfortunate series of unrelated events, or is there something larger at play?

Microsoft releases Bing app for Android, iOS, not Windows Phone 7

Microsoft releases Bing app for Android, iOS, not Windows Phone 7

In a move that can be simultaneously described as puzzling and pragmatic, Microsoft has decided to bring its Bing for Mobile app to Android and iOS before launching it on its very own Windows Phone platform. The company announced the release in a blog post this week, highlighting the app’s most noteworthy features, including a revamped maps module, a new deals service and real-time transit feeds. Interestingly enough, Redmond also based its app on HTML5, rather than Silverlight, in the hopes of providing greater continuity across mobile browser and app interfaces. Only at the very end of the post did Microsoft mention Windows Phone 7: “We’re working to release the same consistent experience for RIM and Windows Phone 7 devices in the future, and will share more details as they become available.” At first glance, this decision may seem somewhat counterintuitive, but it also makes a lot of sense, considering the fact that Android and iOS comprise the bulk of the consumer market (and, of course, the fact that Bing is already integrated within Windows Phone 7). It appears, then, that Microsoft is simply trying to get Bing out to the widest initial audience, which seems pretty logical.

Samsung drops plan to file Apple suit in Korea, will battle in ‘the global market’ instead

Samsung drops plan to file Apple suit in Korea, will battle in 'the global market' instead

A Samsung executive revealed to Korean Newspaper The Chosun Ilbo today that it will drop its plans to pursue Apple for patent violations in Korea, instead focusing efforts on cases overseas. The anonymous exec cited performance in his company’s home country, saying “we concluded that we should engage in legal battles with Apple only in the global market, but not in order to gain more market share in Korea.” The move seems logical given the company’s existing share, and will allow Samsung to maintain a positive image at home, where it dominates in categories ranging from televisions to refrigerators. So Apple may be in the clear in Sammyland, but the battle will likely continue beyond Korean shores for some time to come.

Apple’s US online store begins selling unlocked, contract-free iPhone 4S

Apple's US online store begins selling unlocked, contract-free iPhone 4S

You can’t expect to see one for “one to two weeks,” but those hellbent on holding out for an unlocked iPhone 4S here in the US can finally snag one without jetting off to Australia (among other places). Nearly five months to the day after Apple started selling the iPhone 4 in unlocked fashion in the States, the iPhone 4S is joining the club, with a 16GB model going for $649, a 32GB model for $749 and a 64GB variant for $849. Just so you’re aware, the unlocked phone enables you to use any micro-SIM from any GSM carrier worldwide, but it won’t play nice with CDMA carriers “such as Verizon Wireless or Sprint.” And yes, both the black and white versions are up for order. Siri’s UK voice answers questions about his journey to the iPhone 4S

Siri's UK voice answers questions about his journey to the iPhone 4S

The first rule of being Siri is do not talk about being Siri — but Jon Briggs, the voice of the iPhone helper’s British version, has, fittingly, has bucked that trend. Apple’s preference for mystery surrounding the matter hasn’t silenced the one-time tech journalist turned voice over actor who discovered that he was the voice of the 4S’s assistant upon hearing his “flat and even” readings played back on a commercial for the handset. Briggs told The Telegraph that he recorded the basis for the British Siri five or six years ago, speaking some 5,000 sentences over the course of three weeks for “a decent sum.”
