Toshiba’s quad-core Satellite L750D is one of the first available Llano laptops

Toshiba's quad-core Satellite L750D is one of the first available Llano laptops

When AMD came clean with its Fusion A-Series platform, the outfit was quick to admit that some manufacturers have already started slipping these hybrid CPU / GPU chips into their spankin’ new PCs. Still, at this early stage we still haven’t spotted many of ‘em — if anything, we have a better idea what’s on tap for later this summer. But here we have the Toshiba Satellite L750D-ST4N01, the first available Llano-packing notebook we’ve seen since the A-Series’ launch. At $699, this 15.6-incher might seem like a forgettable system with its 4GB of RAM, 640GB 5400RPM hard drive, 1366 x 768 panel, and three USB 2.0 ports. Heck, Toshiba barely even gave the L series lip service when it announced a slew of laptops last week. But, what makes this seemingly ho-hum machine special is that it packs AMD’s mid-range quad-core A6-3400M chip and an AMD Radeon HD 6520G graphics core — a combination that adds just $10 to the cost over a similarly configured Satellite L755-S5258 with a dual-core Core i5-2410M processor and integrated Intel graphics. The L750D isn’t for you? The deluge of A-Series systems hasn’t even begun yet, friends. And while the jury’s still out on real-world battery performance, this should make it crystal clear that if nothing else, AMD is taking no prisoners when it comes to pricing.

HP ships $50 WiFi Mobile Mouse

If you’ve been waiting oh-so-patiently for HP’s $49.99 WiFi Mobile Mouse to ship, take heart — the aforesaid critter is now ready to free up one more valuable USB port at your workstation. As mentioned before, this ain’t your mum’s wireless mouse, as it makes use of WiFi technology — you know, instead of the tried-and-true Bluetooth. In other words, this bad boy doesn’t require anything other than itself to connect. HP promises up to nine months of battery life, offers five programmable buttons, a four-way tilt scroll wheel and adjustable sensitivity. Just think — you can finally choose to keep those remaining Four Loko cans chilled without resorting to an inbuilt trackpad.

Samsung Series 5 Chromebook now shipping in Arctic White, no signs of Pearl White yet…

It seemed that Samsung too loves white gadgets. We’ve previously seen limited and rare white Galaxy Tab 10.1, and now the Series 5 Chromebook is officially shipping to those eagerly awaiting the Google-powered laptop. If you weren’t among the high-end coupon clippers who snatched one up during the surprise sale at Gilt a couple of weeks ago, you can now pick up a Chromebook of your own. At least for now, however, it looks like you’ll have to settle for a white exterior — the “Titan Silver” (also known as black) edition is still in pre-order mode at both Best Buy and Amazon.

Sony updates their VAIO C series and E series

Sony updates their VAIO C series and E series

Sony’s mainstream E and C series of laptops are getting a bit of an update with some new color options and updated processors in the case of E series. The 14-, 15.5-, and 17.3-inch Vaio E models are finally joining the Sandy Bridge brigade with second-gen Core i3 and i5s, while also adding an AMD Fusion option on the 15.5-inch version for all you Sunnyvale fans out there. The smaller members of the E family will be available in four colors (blue, pink, white, and black) while their big brother is limited to white and black. The C series is staying the same, but adding Neon Red and Thunder Blue to your selection of hues. The updated PCs will be available for pre-order on June 19th but, if you really have your heart set on that red Vaio C, you’ll have to head to select retailers like Fry’s, ABT, B&H, J&R, MicroCenter, or (wait for it…) Nebraska Furniture Mart — while you’re there, pick up a bright red sofa to match your new laptop.

HP upgrades 11 Pavilion and ProBook laptops to AMD Llano APUs

HP upgrades 11 Pavilion and ProBook laptops to AMD Llano APUs

Llano laptops are like buses. You wait two years for just one to arrive and then eleven come out at once. Yep, AMD’s long-awaited hybrid CPU / GPU has finally gone official today and HP is wasting no time in introducing laptops harnessing its Accelerated Processing powers. On the consumer side, the Pavilion dv (dv4, dv6, dv7) and g (g4, g6, g7) series are both getting in on the action, with the dv models touting fancier additions like Beats Audio and CoolSense as justifications for their dearer pricing. For the more demure or business-oriented AMD fans, ProBook laptops of both b (6465b, 6465b) and s (4535s, 4435s, 4436s) varieties are also getting A-series processor options. Pricing starts out at $600 on the dv line and $450 for the g series, with both expected to ship in July, whereas the ProBook models will be a bit more punctual and arrive on June 27th, provided you have at least $519 to splash out. Ful PR after the break.

Panasonic gives its ToughBook some healthy speed bump

Panasonic gives its ToughBook some healthy speed bump

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it — words Panasonic has clearly taken to heart with the Toughbook 19. It’s time for the rugged, 10-inch convertible tablet to get its annual refresh and not much has changed visibly. Instead, the company gave its internals a boost with some Sandy Bridge goodness and slapped a new TransflectivePlus screen in this military-grade machine for computing in direct sunlight. Impressively, the Core i5 found inside is not of the ULV variety, it’s a standard voltage 2520m powering this completely sealed, fanless design. Additionally, the Toughbook 19 now comes standard with 4GB of RAM and has a pair of SSD options for added durability. You’ll be able to pick one up, and use it as a frisbee, in September starting at $3,349.

Asus announced new 11.6-inch UX21 laptop, aims directly at Apple’s MacBook Air

Asus announced new 11.6-inch UX21 laptop, aims directly at Apple’s MacBook Air

The term “unibody” was coined by Apple ever since they reviewed their first MacBook Air from within an envelope. Samsung was the latest to mimic Apple by unveiling their 9-Series laptops, and now Asus is going to join the supermodel laptop crowd with their brand new UX-series ultraportable laptops.

The laptop has an 11.6-inch screen with 1366×768 resolutions, with the thickness of 17mm being the thickest part (laptop closed). Once opened, the sloping design makes the laptop body shrink from 7mm to a staggering 3mm. the touchpad is made of glass, and the keyboard keys are all metal. And hear this; the laptop only weights 1.1kg! Feeling the awesomeness already? There’s more.

The laptop might be small and light and slim, but it ain’t sloppy. The laptop is said to be powered by a Core i5 processor (1.7GHz Intel Core i5-2557M to be specific) for the standard trim, but also comes with an optional Core i7 (low voltage mobile version of course, though Asus didn’t mention which model specifically), making it more powerful than the MacBook Air and the 9-Series laptop.

There are some subtle differences with regards to their feature sets. One of the UX21′s two USB ports houses USB 3.0 technology (the Air 11-inch has two USB 2.0 ports). Instead of mini-DisplayPort, the UX21 has a mini-HDMI port. They both don’t have built-in SD card readers, which would have been impressive had Asus pulled one off. Storage comes in SSD varieties: 64GB or 128GB, and they’re connected using SATA 3. Asus also claims that with these drives, the UX21 can resume from sleep in two seconds. Of course, there’s a bad news, and that is the battery is concealed within, just like the MacBook Air.

And one more good news, is that one of the Asus representative mentioned that the laptop “should be” priced less than the 11-inch MacBook Air. Oh! My! God! I want one!

ASUS preparing an ultraslim Eee PC ‘with a twist’ for Computex

ASUS preparing an ultraslim Eee PC 'with a twist' for Computex

Computex is just around the corner, and that means exciting times for hardware fans. Asus is said to be unveiling some new hardware (as usual), and here we are yet again, speculating what’s going to happen in the next few days.

Asus has released a new teaser for their Computex lineup, and this time it’s a “super-slim sensation [with] a twist.” Many are saying that it’s a super slim Eee PC, but what’s the “twist” here?

Notebook Italia has dug up the above image, which looks like a match for ASUS’ shadow-obscured teaser and shows what may very well be the thinnest Eee PC we’ve yet seen.

Last time ASUS was touting anything laptop-shaped that was quite so slim, it was the Neo smartbook prototype that never made it out of the labs, but this time manufacturers are getting more obsessed with slim products, so this may just be it. But still, where’s the twist?

Dell XPS 15z now available, less than an inch thick!

Dell’s new XPS laptop is finally here, and boy oh boy it sure looks sexy.

Dell’s latest XPS, the 15z tries to mimic the success of Apple’s MacBook Pro, with anodized aluminum enclosure, which really makes the laptop very sexy, like Samsung’s 9-Series laptops. The 15-inch laptop weights at 2.51kg with only 0.97 inches thick (24.68mm) at its thickest point, making it very slim and slender.

Apple patent application reveals an LCD with switchable, privacy-protecting viewing angles

Apple patent application reveals an LCD with switchable, privacy-protecting viewing angles

Don’t like to let people know what you’re listening on your iPod Touch? Don’t like your friends peeking at your lovey-dovey messages with your scandalous mysterious friend? I think Apple is getting lots of emails regarding these problems that their users are facing, and they’ve come up with a solution apparently.

Apple has a new patent on an LCD display with adjustable viewing angles, explicitly designed to “shield the display away from unintended viewers”, which may slip into future iDevices if Apple managed to iron out this new technology perfectly.

According to the filing, the display would include steering modules made of liquid crystal material, which aim the so-called scattering modules that sit on top of them. The top layer then redirects the light, making it possible to narrow down and alter the viewing angle. The patent specifically calls out cellphones and laptops, paving the way for discreet displays on MacBooks and iPhones, though the broad phrase “other portable electronic devices” leaves plenty of room for iPads and iPod Touches.

No word, of course, on when or if Apple will secure this patent and if so, what devices might incorporate such screens, but Apple is also the company that filed many patents just for the lulz anyway, though there are some that managed to get into final products too. Hopefully we’ll see this in the next iPhone.
