Step aside 1080p, here’s something 16 times more superior than you!
Full HD is all over the place by now, so perhaps we should look into the future. Yes, there’s something even bigger and better then 1080p Full HD, and that’s called Super Hi-Vision. It’s something that NHK of Japan has been developing for years as a successor to HDTV. Super Hi-Vision has an insane resolution of 7,680 x 4,320, but we never actually see a functional prototype, until now.
Sharp has just shown off its latest prototype, which is an 85-inch Direct View LCD-compatible screen with support for Super Hi-Vision. Yes, it’s insanely big, and insanely beautiful, as the thing has 103 pixels per inch (ppi) density. Compared to current day’s 60-inch 1080p HDTV that has only 36ppi, it’s very superior, but there are actually prototypes that’s more superior to this baby from Sharp actually, but they all come in smaller size of course.
The display is said to be able to support 33-Megapixel video and 22.2 channel sound, and is said to arrive some time in 2020, commercially. However, Sharp is said to have interest in demonstrating this during the 2012 Olympics.
Do you fancy transparent screens? They’ve been demoed couple of times by Samsung, but now it’s going into real products. Samsung just showcased their 22-inch Transparent BLU LCD TV at the SID 2011 today, and they’ll be up for grabs starting next week. Samsung says that the product is targeted more for commercial market, specifically advertising, but I’m sure a few weird people would want this in their living room.
There’s always a place for renewable and clean power, be it concept of not. But do you mind if your watch can only tell you time when you blow your smelly mouth towards it? That’s going to be a very smelly watch.
“Hey dude, what time it is?”
“Hold, let me blow my watch!”
Right, that’s going to be very awkward. Designer Julien Moise envisioned a device that’s powered by blown air, displaying the time only when you want to see it. It’s a very good idea, and that your watch will never run out of power, as long as you don’t run out of breath. But if you really do, you still have your trusty iPhone to tell you your time.
Looks like HP not only announced 6 new laptops, but they also announced a brand new and extremely slender 22-inch monitor. It’s called the Elite L2201x, which is an LED-backlit display measuring at only 0.4-inch thick. Resolution is at a very standard 1920 x 1080 display, with 5000:1 contrast ratio, and it works with DisplayPort. What’s more, this very sexy monitor is not only slim but also very affordable, at only $250. Not bad, this would actually be able to contend with the likes of LG and Samsung in terms of price. The Elite L2201x will be shipping on 1st of June. Read more…
If you remember, a small number of iPad 2 where facing backlights bleeding issues, and according to DigiTimes’ anonymous sources, LG Display was “forced to reduce its shipments in the first quarter due to light leakage problem for panels”. If you didn’t know, LG, Panasonic, and Chimei made IPS panels, while Samsung don’t. This shows that LG ‘may’ the culprit of the iPad 2 panel leakage issue, but there’s no official statement to back this up of course. Till now nobody has stepped up to confirm this issue though, which means that this may be a very small issue among the millions of iPad 2 sold.
We’ve already known that the popular e-tailer Amazon is keen to develop a new tablet under their house name after a huge success on their e-Reader the Kindle. Now DigiTimes has got even more news regarding the tablet from Amazon. According to them, the tablet is due in the second half of 2011, though not specific to which month. It’s said that the media tablet will feature a Fringe Field Switching LCD display and touch panel from Amazon fave E Ink Holdings, a company better known for the technology behind the Kindle’s EPD e-paper displays.
According to DigiTimes, Quanta has received the manufacturing honors with production expected to peak at about 700,000 – 800,000 units per month. So yeah, the Amazon Kindle tablet won’t be sporting a Mirasol display according to this gossip. No news about it being Samsung developed too.
Looks like Samsung’s mighty Super AMOLED Plus will soon see a new rival in this elite market of super slim and super light and less reflective LCDs. Toshiba has stepped into this demanding market with its as-yet-unnamed technology seeks improvement in a roughly similar way to Super AMOLED, by fusing the capacitive touch layer and LCD. In so doing, Toshiba claims it can produce an integrated panel just 1mm thick, which it says is less than half the thickness of a conventional LCD touchscreen. Weight is also said to be half and surface reflection is said to be reduced by 10-percent. Hopefully a head-to-head comparison between this unnamed technology and Samsung’s best and meanest will surface soon so that we can compare, and complain. The screen is said to be demonstrated next month over at LA, so until next month then.
Last time fridge that had ice cube counter is considered advance, but now they’re going to be like televisions. People are stuffing LCD screens and even WiFi into a fridge. What de? Facebook on a fridge? Man, I tell you, sneaking to the fridge for a chocolate bar is no longer fun when you see something similar like the memo above.
Samsung’s RF4289 is the kind of fridge that nerd heads and geeky mum and dad will want. It’s got WiFi with LED lighting and a frigging 8-inch LCD panel with touchscreen! Playing angry bird on the fridge? Better not.
Samsung provides quick access to “kitchen relevant applications” like Google calendar, Weatherbug forecasts, Epicurious recipes, AP news, Pandora music, and Picasa photos. You can also leave notes for the family or tap out a quick tweet should the compulsion arise.
The wireless touchscreen is available on both the RSG309 side-by-side and RF4289 four-door french door models, but only the latter has received an end of May US launch date. Just keep in mind that the suggested $3,499 retail price is exactly $500 more expensive than Samsung’s existing 28 cubic foot french door model, the touchscreen-less RF4287. It ain’t cheap to get Angry Bird on your fridge yo!
Maybe you can consider sticking an iPad 2 on your existing fridge instead, with the magical Magic Cover.
The rivalry in Korea is not slowing down. Whenever Samsung announce a new breakthrough, LG is sure to follow (and vice versa, taking turns). LG is again taking a lead in the display technology by demonstrating a crazy new 47-inch display that packs in everything a geek could want: IPS technology, 1080p resolution, multitouch, and some good old transparency, just because they can. Totally a James Bond technology right there.
Of course, this is not a commercial product for home use, but this so-called Window Display is intended for advertisers and other digital signage proprietors, meaning that even if it wasn’t still at the concept stage, it likely wouldn’t be populating living rooms anyway.
Transparent displays, how are you going to utilize them in real life application? Well, it seemed that Samsung doesn’t really care about that, as the Korean giant has decided to start the mass production of its 22-inch transparent displays. These transparent panels will be produced in black-and-white and color variants and will have a transparency rate of over 20 percent and 15 percent respectively. Samsung says that its transparent LCD panels are also energy efficient, which consumes 90 percent less power compared to a regular LCD display, which sounds very unbelievable to me. The Samsung 22-inch transparent LCD display supports WSXGA+ (1680×1050) resolution, a contrast ratio of 500:1, HDMI and USB support. Now, where will we see this being use?
